Is there a Norway ferry pass?
Not the way most people picture it. There is no tourist pass you buy once and wave at the quay, and there is no ticket to print. What exists is AutoPASS for ferje, the national scheme every car ferry in Norway runs on, and your place in it is decided by which of five arrangements your vehicle is attached to. That is what the searches for a «ferry pass» are really after, so here is the whole ladder in one table, from cheapest to dearest.

The trap is in the third row. A toll tag alone gives 10 per cent, not 50. The 50 needs that same tag registered in a prepaid agreement with money sitting on a ferry account. Two different things, one name, and a gap of forty percentage points between them.
Two more things worth knowing before you plan around it. The prepaid agreement covers almost every crossing in the country, but not some crossings in Trøndelag and not Moss–Horten. And the old AutoPASS ferry card, the verdikort and storbrukerkort people still search for, no longer exists: the prepaid agreement replaced it, and there is no card any more, only the tag and the account behind it.
What the prepaid deposit costs
The deposit is not a fee. It is your own money on an account, drawn down as you sail. But it has to go in before the discount applies, and for 2026 the Norwegian authorities set it by length:
- Group 1, vehicles 0–8 metres: 2 200 kr
- Group 2, 8.01–17.50 metres: 10 600 kr
- Group 3, over 17.51 metres: 20 100 kr
That is the number that decides whether the agreement is worth it for a holiday. Two weeks on the west coast might cross eight fjords; at Halhjem–Sandvikvåg prices the agreement saves 88 kroner a crossing, so it pays back inside the trip — but you have to front 2 200 kroner to start, and a private account takes at most two vehicles.
Paying with a foreign car
You do nothing at the quay. The plate is read as you board, and without any arrangement the registered owner is invoiced afterwards at full fare plus the 10-kroner invoice fee. Foreign vehicles pay exactly the same fares as Norwegian ones — there is no visitor surcharge on a Norwegian ferry.

What the crossings cost: five fjords, every class

Mortavika–Arsvågen breaks the pattern on purpose: 74 of its 178 kroner are road tolls for the Rogfast project, charged inside the ferry ticket. No discount touches that part, which is why the prepaid fare there is 126 kroner while Halhjem–Sandvikvåg, nearly the same ticket price, comes down to 88.
Electric cars pay 70 per cent, not half
This is the most repeated mistake about Norwegian ferries, and we had it wrong on this page until September. A zero-emission vehicle has its own published fare, printed in the tariff as its own number rather than worked out as a percentage — and that number is not the same for every length class.
We went through the whole tariff file: 6 048 priced rows across 126 crossings. The pattern is unambiguous.
- A car under 6 metres, class AP1: 70 per cent of the ordinary fare. 588 of 606 rows land on exactly 0.70; the rest is rounding. That is 57 kroner against 81 on Lavik–Oppedal, 424 against 605 on Bodø–Moskenes.
- Everything longer than 6 metres, AP2 to AP9: 50 per cent. All 4 800 rows. An electric motorhome at 7 metres pays 90 kroner where a diesel one pays 180.
- Motorcycles: about 51 per cent of the ordinary motorcycle fare.
So the discount is smallest for the vehicle most people drive. An electric car saves 30 per cent on the ferry; an electric motorhome saves 50. Plug-in hybrids get nothing. And the agreement discount comes off the electric fare rather than the ordinary one, so an electric car on a prepaid agreement pays 29 kroner on Lavik–Oppedal against 81 for a petrol car with no arrangement.

126 crossings on the AutoPASS tariff, by county — 69 of them are free. The fare is for a car under 6 metres with no agreement. A tag takes 10 per cent off, a prepaid agreement 50, and an electric car under 6 metres pays 70 per cent of the figure shown.

How Norwegian ferries work
Ferries are part of the road network: the E39 along the west coast alone has seven of them, and the map treats each as a stretch of road with a timetable. On the national-road crossings you do not book and you do not queue for a ticket. You drive down to the quay, the plate is read, and you board the next sailing. Fares are set by the state under the AutoPASS for ferje scheme and depend on one thing only: the total length of what you drive.
The fare is also the same whichever company runs the boat. Fjord1, Norled, Torghatten and Boreal all charge the national tariff, so a search for one operator's price list leads back to the same table — the crossing and the length class decide, not the funnel.
Passengers travel free on the AutoPASS crossings, in the car and on foot. You pay for the vehicle, not for who is sitting in it.

A motorhome towing a car, a car towing a boat: the trailer counts, and the steps between classes are steep. On Halhjem–Sandvikvåg class AP1 is 176 kroner and AP2 is 382 — more than double, for eight centimetres over six metres. Measure the outfit once and enter it; if you type the registration into the app, the length comes from the vehicle register.
Free ferries
Since 2023 a long list of small crossings has been free: ferries to islands and villages with no road connection, and any crossing carrying under 100 000 passengers a year. 69 of the 126 crossings in the directory below cost nothing. The main crossings on the E39 and the trunk roads still charge.
The wait is the item nobody shows you
A 20-minute crossing with a 19-minute wait is a 40-minute crossing. Is there a Norway ferry pass for tourists?
No. There is no tourist pass and no ticket. Every car ferry runs on the AutoPASS for ferje scheme, and what you pay depends on which arrangement your vehicle has: a prepaid agreement takes 50 per cent off, a toll tag alone 10 per cent, FerryPay and paying the crew by card take nothing off but avoid the invoice fee.
How much discount does a toll tag give on a ferry?
10 per cent with a valid AutoPASS-approved tag on its own. 50 per cent for private customers and 40 for businesses if that tag is registered in an AutoPASS for ferje prepaid agreement with money on the account. They are two different arrangements and the difference is large.
What is FerryPay?
The official card-based way to pay for Norwegian ferries without a toll tag. It gives no discount, but it avoids both the posted invoice and the 10-kroner invoice fee. It is aimed at exactly the case a visitor is in: no tag, no wish for paperwork.
What happens if I take the ferry with no arrangement at all?
You board as normal and the camera reads the plate. The registered owner then gets a full-fare invoice by post with a 10-kroner fee added, and no environmental rate unless the vehicle's data is registered.
Do electric cars pay half on Norwegian ferries?
Not the car. An electric car under six metres pays 70 per cent of the ordinary fare, 57 kroner against 81 on Lavik–Oppedal. Every zero-emission vehicle longer than six metres, such as an electric motorhome, pays 50 per cent. Plug-in hybrids get no discount.

No. Every AutoPASS crossing follows the same national tariff whichever company runs the boat. The crossing, the length class and your arrangement decide the price.
